I ran out of time this week to write the blog I had planned so diverting a little to tell you about my story with cleansing. Who fasts here? Who goes on a cleanse? Who is like me and never fasted in their lives? I have to admit to you all that I don't believe in fasting, it's just not for me. I can easily get low blood sugar and low blood pressure so that's always been a great excuse for not fasting. I also feel that if I eat incredibly healthy the bulk of the time why would I need to fast.

Then in January this year I saw Deva Premal's post on Instagram about the Medical Medium. I was intrigued and I bought his books. Anthony William speaks the language around food that I love. Wholefoods all the way and fresh fruit and vegetable always. I take it one step further and suggest all organic. Anyway in Anthony William's third book; Thyroid Healing, he has a great detox diet to do for one to three months. I decided to try it.

The thing that impressed me the most was Anthony's encouragement to eat fruit. Fruit has been given so much bad press lately and I am just not buying in to it. Fruit is incredibly healthy, packed with vitamins, minerals and nutrients. I feel happy when I eat fruit and so does my body. So I was hooked as so many mainstream diets have been telling people to stay away from fruit.

I managed to go on the cleanse for a month before I had to go back to working in the kitchen cooking for retreats. It was a fabulous month. This cleanse you don't have to give up eating. It's my type of cleanse. Why would I ever want to give up eating! I was headache free the whole month, no menstrual pains and I am sure my cracked heels were close to being smooth for the first time in a decade. I still haven't had a headache and it is now 6 weeks since I started the cleanse and had to go off it because I was working.

Above all else I love the ritual involved in taking part in his cleanse and some parts of it I will continue on for as long as I can.

The main thing for me was the two glasses of lemon water first thing in the morning followed by a big glass of celery juice. Then for breakfast a big smoothie packed with fruit. Lunch a salad packed with goodness and some more fruit and dinner consisted of sweet potato veggies and my favourite tahini sauce.

This week due to being time poor I will share with you the simple recipes that I have been making during the cleanse. If you are curious buy Anthony's books or get them from the library. His first book The Medical Medium is worth a read but the cleanse in there is too intense so I suggest following the cleanse in his third book Thyroid Healing.

And if you really aren't into doing a cleanse I promise I will be back with more exciting recipes next week

Detox smoothie

Based on Anthony William's recipe
1½  bananas
1 cup blueberries
Any other fruit - I usually add papaya or orange and a lime
Big handful of coriander
Handful of parsley and mint
1 tsp Spirulina
1 tsp dulse flakes
Water to your desired thickness

Place everything in the blender and blitz until smooth.

Fig Salad

Salad fit for a princess/prince  (even if she/he is detoxing)

There are so many things you can put in a salad to make it enjoyable. It is the meal I look forward to the most. My favourite ingredients are listed below.
Sunflower sprouts
Sprouted legumes
Nut or seed sprinkle
Tomatoes or fresh figs or dried apricots
Water melon

For a dressing (if in season) mash ½ avocado with lemon juice and add some water to thin and salt. Or make the sunflower sour cream with lemon instead of vinegar

Or my all time favourite dressing below.

Mother of all dressings

¼ cup tahini
¼ tsp turmeric powder or some grated fresh turmeric
Juice of half a lemon or more or less to taste
Water to thin the dressing to your liking- start with ¼ cup first
Salt and pepper to taste

Mix everything with a fork until smooth.

Be part of the food revolution

I am so excited to share that the March course booked out and we will have eight people in the 3 day vegan foundation course starting this Thursday. Really can't wait to meet them and cook with them in the kitchen. In April there are still 3 places left then you will have to wait until August to join the course again. So act swiftly.

I feel this three day course is really part of the food revolution hitting the world right now. So many cool people are becoming vegan as well as those who dabbled in vegetarianism for decades, got lost for a few years and have come back, realising that living a conscious life means they really can't kill animals anymore. In addition they are feeling healthier due to following a vegan diet and know that they are not only being kind to animals but also the environment.

I receive regular emails from people telling me they finally got it and are now vegan. People attend the retreats I cater on and see how incredible vegan food can be and go back home determined to continue on living a vegan life. These people are big influences in their field and their message gets passed down to many.

The Vegan Food Revolution is a peaceful and incredibly kind movement. I am so proud to be a part of it and am so happy you are all along for the ride with me and enjoying these weekly recipes.

Vegan Forever!!

Have a wonderful week everyone and see you next week with a more informative blog post.

With love Veet
